It is no secret that sustainability and taking care of the planet is an essential part of maintaining our lives. Our club aims to allow university students passionate about the relevance of the cause to volunteer in educating the younger generation (4th and 5th) graders about prioritizing a healthy future for our planet. This way, as they get older the level of awareness will be integrated in their community. Activities can range from creating community gardens, educational seminars about ecosystems, as well as focusing core science-based curriculum on environmental biology.
The schools participating will be in Herzliya. Note, that the educational program has been verified by several schools already as well has the Herzliya City Hall. The yearly long program will be divided into five stages whereby each section is focused on a particular subject such an emotional connection to nature as well as how to use recycled materials to recreate necessary structures such as community garden. We also focus on different ecological terrains such as the jungle, the forest, the ocean and the tundra to give a holistic view of the planet and not simply the city we live in. We provide knowledge of sustainability, raise awareness of waste issues, create ownership of public space, and cultivate a strong relationship.
Relevancy Today
One of the biggest and most relevant issues regarding sustainability in Israel is the overuse of plastic in the society. As Israel is one of the heaviest producers of plastic in the regions and considering the cultural integration (Kosher), plastic is in extremely high use. The ethnical diversity in Israel causes gaps in awareness regarding plastic usage as well as other overwhelming issues ( such as security) where sustainability basically gets pushed down to the bottom of the list. We would want the students to question the relevance and truly investigate why a sustainable future can ease other problematic sections of society. For example, we can ask the students to go home and count the number of items in their home made out of plastic, ask them if they believe other materials and structures can replace them and question the usage time of each item. Once all the information is gathered, the students will realize the amount of waste one household produces and by finding alternatives, we can utilize Israel’s technology to become a central producer of alternatives to plastic.

זה לא סוד שקיימות ושמירה על הסביבה זאת מגמה ההולכת וגדלה בעולם בגלל חשיבות העניין. המועדון שלנו נותן לסטודנטים עם תשוקה ועניין לנושאים האלה אפשרות מדהימה להתנדב בחינוך ילדים בכיתות ד'-ה' לחשיבות של הטבע ושמירתו בשביל שיהיה לנו עתיד יפה יותר. אנחנו מאמינים שחינוך היא הדרך להעלות את המודעות לנושא כך שכשהילדים יגדלו הם ידעו כמה זה חשוב ומה הם יכולים לעשות כדי להשפיע. הפעילויות שלנו יכללו הקמת גינה קיהלתית לקהילה שבאיזור הבינתחומי, פעולות חינוך על מערכות אקולוגיות ומדעי הסביבה.
בתי הספר המשתתפים הינם בהרצליה, צמוד לבינתחומי. כבר יש לנו מספר בתי ספר שמעוניינים מאוד בתכנית ואם הפיילוט השנה יצליח אנחנו נתרחב במערכת החינוך בארץ! גם עיריית הרצליה משתפת איתנו פעולה ומברכת על היוזמה. תכנית החינוך השנתית שלנו מתחלקת ל-5 שלבים. כל שלב מתמקד בחיבור שונה לטבע תוך לימוד על שיטות שונות למיחזור ויצירה. נלמד את הילדים על מערות אקולוגיות שונות כמו יערות, ג'ונגלים וים כדי שהתלמידים יכירו אקלימים שונים מהאקלים העירוני בו הם חיים. הסטודנטים והתלמידים יקבלו מידע על קיימות, אשפה, אחריות על הסביבה האישית והציבורית ואהבת הארץ.
אקטואליה רלוונטית:
אחד מהנושאים הרלוונטים והחשובים בתחום הקיימות בארץ הוא שימוש היתר בפלסטיק חד פעמי. ישראל היא המדינה המדורגת שנייה בעולם בשימוש בכלים חד פעמיים לנפש! ניתן לקשר זאת לסיבות דתיות של שמירת כשרות או לחוסר מודעות ואיכפתיות של הציבור לכמה פלסטיק הוא מזיק ומזהם. הפערים הסוציו-אקונומיים בארץ גם כן תורמים לבעיה והשיח הציבורי והתקשורתי של שמירה על הסביבה בדרך-כלל נדחק הצידה בשביל נושאי הביטחון המדיני. אנחנו רוצים שסטודנטים יפתחו ללמידה והפנמה של החשיבות של הקיימות ושיטות שמירה על הטבע ומאמינים שאם רק רוצים, הדרך לצמצום הפסולת והחד פעמי היא פשוטה יותר משנדמה! למשל, אם תסתכלו כמה מהמוצרים בביתכם עשויים פסלטיק, תוכלו לראות שכמעט לכל המוצרים הללו יש תחליפים רב פעמיים שיכולים לצמצם את צריכת הפלסטיק של כל אחד מאיתנו ומכמה פלסטיק ואשפה כל אחד מאיתנו יכול להימנע ואיזה שינוי מדהים זה יעשה. עם המודעות הגוברת גם יגיעו יותר ויותר פתרונות טכנולוגים לצמצום השימוש בפלסטיק ובשמירה על הסביבה, ומה מקום יותר מתאים לזה ממדינת הסטארטאפים?
